All Scouts from Stoneham Gather for Camporee

Camp Resolute - Bolton, MA

Scout Troop 513 greeted over 20 Cub Scouts from Pack 540 for a weekend of skill development and fun in the outdoors. The older Scouts in Troop 513 took the opportunity to mentor the younger Scouts in a variety of Scout skills like cooking, knife/ax safety, knots, and fire building. For many of the Cub Scouts, this was the first time they were able to try these skills.

Unlike Cub Scouts, where the skill instruction is done by the adults, a Scout Troop is run by the youth who also prepare the lessons and the program for their peers. “We’ve been preparing for this for the last month. The youth leaders got together to figure out what skills we wanted to teach and how best to teach the Cub Scouts.” said Dilan P., who serves as the Senior Patrol Leader, which is the primary youth leader in the troop. Xu Simon, a mother of a Cub Scout, said “Troop 513's involvement not only made the experience that much more enjoyable for the Cub Scouts, but it allowed parents to witness the high caliber of citizenship and other skills their youngsters can expect to develop as they continue to engage with the scouting programs."

However, the event wasn’t just focused on skill instruction, the Scouts of Pack 540 and Troop 513 also had an incredible time hiking around the camp and playing games. After all, Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the whole Scouting movement, once said “Scouting is a game with a purpose.” Giving the young men the opportunity to lead and organize an event like this is crucial for their own development as leaders. Joshua S., a Wolf Cub, shared that “that is the most fun I have ever had camping!  My favorite part was playing with all of the other kids."

“This is one of my favorite trips of the year. Watching all of the Scouts in Stoneham together is a reminder of the impact of this program. We’ve been doing this for over a decade and it’s awesome to see kids go from being the Cub Scouts participating in the program to being the older Scouts planning and running the event in only a few years,” said Jack Woodman, Assistant Scoutmaster.

Troop 513 does monthly campouts. This year, we are going canoeing down the Ipswich River, biking along the Cape Cod Canal, and hiking up Mt. Monadnock. We meet every Wednesday at 7pm at the First Congregational Church. Pack 540 goes camping a few times a year and has monthly meetings at [...]. Additionally, each grade has a monthly den meeting that depends on your child’s elementary school grade.
