Why Scouting?

For over 115 years, Scouting has been making an impact in communities throughout America. In Stoneham, we have been serving youth since 1924.

In a nationwide study, Baylor University found that Scouting "enhance[s} youth's values, ethics, decision making, relationships and personal development." Click here to read the full study.

Scouting changes lives! That's the best-selling point we can hope to offer. Through leadership and social development utilizing the outdoors, Scouting helps young people become tomorrow's ethical leaders. While that might be a great selling point for parents, we know that it's crucial that youth have an amazing experience while that development happens. At all levels of Scouting in Stoneham, our young people build lifelong friends and have new experiences that will leave a lasting impact on their lives.

Scouting in Stoneham

John Conlin

Eagle Scout - 2012

"Now that I’ve grown beyond the program, I realize scouting wasn’t just about earning badges or advancing ranks—it was about building character, responsibility, and a mindset of continuous learning. I see scouting not just as a childhood experience but as a lifelong guide—its lessons in perseverance, teamwork, and integrity continue to influence my decisions every day."

Dilan Patel

Eagle Scout - 2025

"Through Scouting, I’ve learned a number of skills ranging from cooking to tying all kinds of knots, as well as working with people and growing my leadership abilities if you if someone asked you why I would say because it’s a fantastic opportunity to not only connect with the outdoors but to develop leadership and interpersonal skills."

Yari Yepez

Mother of Two Eagle Scouts

“I’m proud of the leadership skills my sons were able to develop on their path on becoming an Eagle Scout."

Jim McLaughlin

Scoutmaster, Troop 513

"Scouting to me is a very valuable program. It’s not just about going camping. It teaches skills like leadership, first aid, life saving skills , knot tying, cooking, money management and survival.
Scouting also gives an opportunity for Scouts to take pride in their community by taking part in community events! And you can see it at the events the Scouts enjoy being there for their community!

As an Eagle Scout I’ve learned all these skills at an early age by becoming a scout and its skills I’ve taken with me throughout my life from the Military to the fire department to my home life and now back as the Scoutmaster for the troop!"
